The next time you visit the library, take a minute to stop in the front lobby and look at the beautiful antique print of Milan hanging above the display case.  This historic view of the city was given to the Library by Ray Zilinskas, Director of the Chemical and Biological Weapons Nonproliferation Program at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies.

Tomorrow is Earth Day and the Library is continuing to celebrate.  We’ve been featuring different areas of our environmental studies collection all month – this week’s topic is ocean and marine resources.  The display case in our front lobby is filled with books on marine conservation, protected areas, and fisheries.

Tomorrow’s MIIS events include:

Sustainability in Cities: What Cities are Doing and How they are Doing it
Wed. Apr 22, 3 – 8PM
DeAnza Ballroom, Monterey Conference Center
A mix of panels, speakers, and more participatory activities will introduce the sustainability efforts of cities during three simultaneous sessions.

If you are a regular reader of The Christian Science Monitor, you may have noticed that the newspaper has disappeared from our newspaper shelves.  The Christian Science Monitor published it’s last newspaper edition on March 27.  The new Christian Science Monitor is a weekly magazine which you will find in our magazine/journal stacks on the second floor.

In honor of National Library Week – April 12-18 – the Library is inaugurating a new Faculty Authors Collection.  Located on the second floor, adjacent to the New Books section, the Faculty Authors Collection houses books that are authored, edited or translated by MIIS faculty and staff.  We’ve also included books that contain chapters authored by one of our faculty.


Here’s a list of what’s currently in the collection.  We’ll will continue to add new volumes.

The Library is celebrating Earth Day (April 22) during the entire month of April.  Every week we’ll have a new display of books in our front lobby – this week we are featuring books on green business to tie in with the 2009 International Trade Conference, Trade and the Environment: the Value Proposition of Greening a Business, Friday, April 17, 8:30AM-5:00PM at the Irvine Auditorium.  For more information and registration information, click here.

Green tip of the week:  Recycling your batteries is easy!  Just drop them off at the Library – we have a container for recycling batteries on the table near the front lobby.
