This is that bittersweet time of year when we congratulate our graduates and say “farewell” to seeing them on campus as “students”.

It’s reassuring to know that the MIIS family extends beyond our campus boundaries through continued friendships, city alumni group events (find a group on Facebook!), reunions, coworkers from MIIS, and more.

Apply for a new US-based field program and training in Salt Lake City, Utah this summer.

The FMS program will launch a domestic training program on May 28, 2013 at the Sorenson Center for Global Impact Investing at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. This training is excellent for those who want to work in the social impact investing space in the United States.

Apply for the training and a 3-6 month US-based field placement today. Applications reviewed on a rolling basis.

GSIPM’s Frontier Market Scouts program hosted 35 Chinese social entrepreneurs on ECSEL fellowships for a Point Lobos hike and beach bonfire at Stillwater Cove in Pebble Beach this past April.

ECSEL brings together China’s top social entrepreneurs for self-learning, collaboration, and improved impact. ECSEL fellows traveled to Harvard, Stanford, and the Monterey Institute as part of their US tour.

In 2010, the Schoenfeld Foundation formally launched the ECSEL fellowship and that year, a cohort of 30 top Chinese undergraduate and MBA students traveled to the United States for a week of intensive business training. At that year’s CGIU conference, former US President Bill Clinton publicly honored the ECSEL program for its work supporting Chinese social enterprise.

Monterey Institute student Jessica “Jessy” Bradish (MAIEP/MBA ’13) received the 2013 Student Innovator Award at the Monterey Bay Regional Business Plan Competition last Friday. ”Winning the Student Innovator Award was a wonderful culmination of my joint Masters in International Environmental Policy and Business Administration,” says Jessy. The following Monterey Institute of International Studies students have been awarded a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) to study critical needs languages during the summer of 2013:

Gabriella Abrego (Chinese)

Heather Frank (Chinese)

Shane Mason (Urdu)

Jennifer Tribble (Arabic)

These students are among the approximately 610 U.S. undergraduate and graduate students (elected from 5000 applicants) who received a scholarship  to spend seven to ten weeks in intensive language institutes this summer in one of 13 countries to study Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Indonesian, Japanese, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, or Urdu.

Once again proving that the NPTS program is on the cutting edge of global security topics, Amy Smithson from the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies commented on chemical weapons possibly used by Syria’s Bashar al-Assad. Amy’s commentary can be viewed at the PBS News Hour Youtube page.

The Monterey Institute of International Studies and its James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) were pleased to learn recently that the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) has awarded a grant of $118,900 to support a research project on “Nuclear Norms in Global Governance” to be co-led by Professor Avner Cohen of the Institute’s Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies program faculty and Professor Maria Rost Rublee, a senior lecturer at the Australian National University.
