“Unforgettable” Green Business Networking Trip to Chile

Some of our Spanish students recently went to Chile to practice business networking. They were interviewed for an article published in the June 2011 Communique!

“The networking opportunities were invaluable,” says Charles (Cam) Matack (MPA ’11) about the trip he and seven Monterey Institute classmates took to Chile over spring break with assistance from the director of Middlebury College’s Chile Schools Abroad site.Professor Vicki Porras organized the trip to offer her students in Business Spanish 482 the opportunity to use their language skills in real-life business settings and to further their individual career interests at the same time.

协会与来访的蒙特雷国际研究学院代表团座谈

应我协会邀请，蒙特雷国际研究学院学生代表团一行11人于2012年3月17-25日到京进行为期一周的交流访问。代表团由八位该院学习汉语的核不扩散专业研究生和三名教师组成。

19日，代表团与协会专家进行了座谈。协会专家介绍了中国核不扩散和核裁军的政策立场和实践，从不同角度阐述了对国际防扩散形势和地区热点防扩散问题的学术见解和主张，并坦诚回答了学员关于伊朗和朝鲜核问题、美俄核裁军以及印巴核问题等国际热点的提问。座谈会气氛热烈，问答互动踊跃。交流增进了学员对中国核不扩散政策和核裁军主张的了解。座谈会由黎弘秘书长主持，李长和副会长和胡豫闽研究员等作了专题发言。

在京期间，代表团还将访问现代国际关系研究院、北京大学、中国改革开放论坛等单位。同时，中国外交部军控司主管领导将会见代表团。

2012 Monterey Model has been announced!

The Monterey Model is a unique event where students in different language study programs get together and present on a common topic in their second languages. They rely on students from MIIS’s interpretation program to relay their presentation to non-speakers of their second language. Please see below for the flyer and program description! Xuejiao Hu’s experience in Beijing

Xuejiao Hu is a student in MIIS’s nonproliferation program. In March, she went with a group of students and professors to Beijing, China, to discuss issues relating to nonproliferation with policymakers. She wrote a blog about it here.

“The afternoon activity was at the Center for American Studies in which the Professor discussed the issue of nonproliferation and China’s stance on that particular issue.”

“I’m learning a ton of new things here…it feels like an intensive course for nonproliferation and I like it. A lot.”

Tanilee Eichelberger’s internship in Mexico

Tanilee Eichelberger is a MIIS student in the Masters in Public Administration and International Management program. She completed an internship in Mexico in the summer of 2011. Below are some excerpts from her blog.

“I have landed in the Yucatán region of Mexico to work with Centro Ecologico Akumal, an organization working to create models for sustainable tourism development in the Mexican Caribbean through research, education and outreach.”

“An interesting conversation with [the head of finance] lead me to understand that the organization is suffering so much from financial sustainability that he believes that every staff member should fundraise for their own salary.”

“No hay solamente una necesidad de ofrecer servicios, una organización tiene que tener un sistema de ingresos que es independiente de un fundador y mejor con varias fuentes de ingresos, idealmente de varios mecanismos para disminuir el riesgo de un cambio de una fuente de ingresos.”
